21/12/2007 - THE WORST CHRISTMAS PRESENT IN THE WORLD! PDF Print E-mail

The recent news that 500 jobs in the Electolux factory in Spennymoor would be 'off-shored' to a plant in Poland was greeted with anger by the nationalist Trades Union Solidarity.

In protest local Solidarity members yesterday leafleted the workers in the plant highlighting the growing problem of globalisation and job losses.

General Secretary, Patrick Harrington stated "To add insult to injury, after allowing in so many workers from Eastern Europe, we are now exporting jobs there too! Following on from Cadburys near Bristol it indicates a worrying trend."

"The proposed downsizing of the plant, which would have led to the retention of at least 300 jobs, should have been given a chance. We call upon the owners to rethink their position and delay the decision to close the plant in its entirety. The foreign owners were very happy to make profits out of the local workforce for years and they need to give something back. Their announcement of closure must be the worst Christmas present ever!"
