RANK AND FILE postal workers remain confused at the decision of the Communication Workers Union to call off the national strike action planned for last Friday and yesterday.
The CWU say that Royal Mail bosses have made a new offer – but details remain sketchy. An "interim agreement" will mean that there will be “no industrial action in the run-up to and during the Christmas period.”
The postponed industrial action would have been the third wave of strikes designed to defend the postal service.
Many workers had been buoyed by the impact of the strikes. They were starting to bite – even Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier had called for direct talks with the unions.
Responding to the news that further strike action had been suspended, Solidarity General Secretary, Patrick Harrington said:
“Rank and file workers are very angry. Just when the strike was starting to bite the CWU has walked away from more industrial action.
There’s been no real news about what’s been agreed with Royal Mail. Some sort of deal has been made behind closed doors.
I hope that the CWU hasn’t sold out. Sadly, only time will tell if the postal workers have been sold down the river”.
